The frontal activity early in the week brought a huge movement of migrating
raptors observed from the Soddy Mountain hawkwatch.
On September 23, 7 Bald Eagles (new daily record) and 1733 Broad-winged
Hawks (new daily record) as well as one Merlin and one Osprey were seen.
September 24, 1154 Broad-winged and one Merlin were seen as well as 2 Bald
Eagles. It is the first time at this hawkwatch that two consecutive 1000+
Broad-winged days have been tallied! (Bill Haley)
I (Kevin Calhoon) birded Hamilton county and observed 86 species on
September 23.
Some of the highlights included:
Cravens House
3 Gray-cheeked Thursh
3 Veery
4 Wood Thrush
25 Swainson's Thursh
2 Yellow-bellied Flycatcher
4 empid sp.
1Peregrine Falcon
12 Broad-winged Hawks
1 House Wren
Sixteen species of warblers for the day including Blackburnian, Nashville,
Yellow-throated, and Bay-breasted.
Standifer Gap Marsh
No sign of the BLACK RAIL heard by Clyde Blum and Betty Wampler on the TOS
fieldtrip on September 21.
2 (at least) Virginia Rail
1 (at least) Sora
1 Sedge Wren
1 Marsh Wren
1 Short-billed Dowitcher
1 female Bobolink
1 Nashville Warbler
Brainerd Levee
1 female Bobolink
The greenway walkway below Chickamuaga Dam has alot of warbler activity
right now. Walk all the way down to the large metal bridge, this area has

Had my first Philadelphia Vireo of the fall at the Cravens House on
September 24. (Kevin Calhoon)
THERE WILL BE A TOS FIELDTRIP AT THE CRAVEN'S HOUSE ON SUNDAY MORNING
SEPTEMBER 29. MEET AT THE LOWER PARKING LOT AT 8:00 AM. KEVIN CALHOON WILL
BE THE LEADER.
The next general meeting of the Chattanooga TOS will be on October 10 at
7:00
PM at the Accension Luthern Church 720 South Germantown Road
Be on the lookout for more fall migrants.
