The TOS fieldtrip wading the Brainard Levee on October 18 was a great
success. Highlights included:
15 Green-winged Teal
51 Double-crested Comorants
1 Sora
27 Wilson's Snipe
5 Sedge Wren
2 Marsh Wren
1 Lincoln's Sparrow
1 Grasshopper Sparrow
Also Swamp, Savannah, Song and Field Sparrows.
There was an interesting mix of migrant birds at the Cravens House on
October 17 with neotropical migrants Still heading south as well winter
residents making their first appearances. Highlights included:
2 Yellow-bellied Sapsucker
1 Eastern Wood-Peewee
1 Red-eyed Vireo
1 House Wren
2 Winter Wren
4 Golden-crowned Kinglet
1 Gray-cheeked Thrush
1 Swainson's Thrush
2 Hermit Thrush (my first of the season)
1 wood Thrush
1 Gray Catbird
6 Tennessee Warbler
2 Yellow-rumped Warbler
4 Scarlet Tanager
6 White-throated Sparrow (my first)
4 Rose-breasted Grosbeak
Jonnie Sue Lyons reported the first White-throated Sparrows of season at
her residence on Signal Mountain on October 15.
Here is a note from Harold Birch:
There were four of us that went to the Riverwalk below the dam Monday
morning of the 10th. The Pelican was still above the dam as was one
Loon.
During the walk we saw 2 Peregrines (one sitting on the wire, directly
above
the walkway, down river from the railroad bridge. We had Redstart,
Magnolia, Black-throated Green, one Palm, 3 or 4 Tennessee, and one
Northern Parula. Several Tree Swallows and Chimney Swift were flying
over the blacktop area just before you get to the pavilions. Also saw
one Indigo Bunting and thought we heard a House Wren. All and all it
was a good day.
David Patterson had the first report of Sandhill Crane for the season at
Standifer Gap Marsh on October 10 with an incredible 95. PLEASE SEND ME
ANY REPORTS YOU HAVE OF SANDHILL CRANES UNTIL THE MIDDLE OF NOVEMBER. I
AM DOING MY YEARLY SURVEY FOR THE USFWS.
Here is banding note from David Aborn:
At Greenway Farms this morning I banded 3 Common Yellowthroats, 2
Magnolia Warblers, 1 Indigo Bunting, 1 House Wren, and 1 Winter Wren.
Carol Fegarido, Betty and Bill Wampler, and I also saw 6 Magnolia
Warblers, 2 Ovenbirds, 1 Philadelphia Vireo, 1 American Redstart, 1
Hooded Warbler, 1 Scarlet Tanager, 1 Rose-breasted Grosbeak, 1 Eastern
Wood-Pewee, and 1 Gray Catbird.
The next general meeting of the Chattanooga TOS will be on November 10
at 7:00 PM
at Accension Lutheran Church, 720 South Germantown Rd.
