[TN-Bird] Changing Times

May 27-28, 2006
Ensley Bottoms

With each day, the shorebird population at the pits, changes in abrupt
although almost predictable ways. Between Saturday and Sunday the numbers
halved
and the last Least and Pectoral Sandpipers, they could be totaled on ones
fingers, vanished to the north by Sunday morning with the exception of a
couple
of laggardly Least. The two Spotted Sandpipers watched closely and sexed,
apparently moved on or took each other's advances exhibited on Saturday
seriously. Maybe a second nesting for this species at the pits is in order.
Good
numbers of Semipalmated Plovers on Saturday were reduced to two individuals
Sunday, while Semipalmated and White-rumped Sandpipers numbers grew slightly,
the
token Baird's have gone.

Semipalmated Sandpipers will also soon disappear and White-rumped Sandpipers
will continue to pass through in small numbers until the middle of June. In
just three weeks, we can expect to see the first returning Least Sandpipers
and thereafter the other species will trickle in, with specie diversity p
eaking in August and numbers peaking in September in the thousands.

One pair of Blue-winged Teal have produced 4 young and Mallard young abound
along with gaggles of gangly goslings. The 3 pair of Northern Shoveler have
finally left. This week, I had 4 Cooper's Hawks ferrying food at separate
locations, spread from South Memphis to Bartlett. For the past two weeks, I've
had Bald Eagles over President's Island acting very territorial with one adult
chasing off a second year bird. There must be a nest again in the area. The
billboard Red-tailed Hawks seemed to have successfully brought off two young
in full view of thousands of vehicles passing along the expressway.
Good Birding !!!
