The Cedar Waxwings made the front page of the Memphis Commercial
Appeal this morning. It seems there is an abundance
of holly berries that have split open in a freeze and are now
fermented, which causes some very reckless behavior
on the part of the inebriated Waxwings with the result that some are
flying into windows and buildings. Concern
over some sort of avian virus caused some calls to the Health
Department.
I remember the first time I ever saw Cedar Waxwings was outside my
office windows at City Hall. They were such
beautiful birds I brought a birdbook to work with me in order to
identify them. They were feeding on holly berries
and flying in rotation to the young trees outside my window.

Memphis
