Yesterday I kept hearing what sounded like the begging
peeps of bird chicks coming from just outside our
kitchen. There is an air conditioning unit there and a
Carolina Wren often uses this spot in the winter as a
roost and wrens have nested there several times in the
past. I went out to investigate and flushed an adult
Carolina Wren from a nest there. I looked and the nest
contained at least 4 chicks (couldn't see all the way
into the nest). This is the earliest I've had young
wrens here at my place. They often start nesting in
March but I've never had young in the nest until
April.

At least three pairs of E. Bluebirds in the yard are
inspecting the various nest boxes. A couple have a
small amount of nesting material in them already.

I'm now up to 14 Purple Martins at my yard colony with
the males now jockeying for the best gourd sites to
attract the females.

Good birding,

Mark Greene
