CADES COVE ROAD TO CLOSE FOR REPAIR WORK

Great Smoky Mountains National Park officials have announced
the

temporary closure of the Cades Cove Loop Road to motorists for one
week,

Monday, February 27-Sunday, March 5, to replace a collapsed stream
crossing

on the south side of the 11-mile one-way road, weather permitting.

Hikers and bikers will be allowed access to most of the road
during

the week?s closure. The work to replace a water ford will be located
near

the exit of the Loop Road, just past Sparks Lane. Therefore, those

visitors will be required to exit via the two-way gravel Sparks Lane
which

will detour visitors back through the entrance to avoid the
construction

activity.

?In the past 5 years, we have replaced several water crossings
along

the Loop Road in late February or early March. We feel given the
level of

visitation to Cades Cove, this time of year is the least disruptive
to the

majority of visitors for performing this necessary work,? said Park

Superintendent Dale Ditmanson.

?The low-water ford across Sea Branch has a 6-inch terracotta
pipe

that is crumbing and undermining the roadway,? said Dale Brukiewa,
Cades

Cove Roads Foreman. ?The week?s work will involve demolition of the
failed

structure, installing a new culvert, framing the concrete form and

installing rebar for applying the new concrete. Although there will
be no

public vehicles on the loop, there will be some construction vehicles
using

the road so pedestrians should use caution,? he continued.

In the event that inclement weather is predicted, the work may
be

rescheduled to the following week. To get up-to-date information on
the

status of the road closure, visitors can call 865/436-1200, ext. 631.
