[TN-Bird] Cackling Goose in Sullivan Co., TN

26 Dec.
This afternoon, while participating on the Bristol CBC, Bill Grigsby & I
observed a Cackling Goose on the South Holston River in Sullivan Co.
The location was just upstream from the Hwy. 44 bridge, southeast of
Bristol (DeLorme Atlas page 71, southeast corner of grid 7B).

The goose was in a flock of Canada Geese resting on the water & later
seen flying upstream. To try to relocate this bird will likely involve
searching all around the area & examining every group of geese, of which
there are many.

Seen next to several Canadas, the Cackling (Richardson's type) was much
smaller, very short-necked, gray breasted with a hint of a white collar;
it had a blocky head & a very short stubby bill. These features were
very striking & noticeable at just a glance.

To my knowledge, this is the first report of this form in NE Tenn.
