At 2:20 p.m., I began to hear Sandhill Cranes while walking on the woodland
road at my home. I started counting as they came flying over an opening in the
trees. They came wave after wave in the hundreds. No time to count--just
estimate. I had to run to a new position to see them as they flew toward the
north and the lines shifted farther eastward until I had to use binocs to
count. This lasted until 2:55 p.m. My estimate was 2,300 more or less.
After 40 years of counting cranes over this place, I was beginning to wonder if
I had missed them this season.
