After re-reading my bird books, I realized I mis-IDed the Yellowlegs at
Rankin Wildlife Management Area. The 3 birds were LESSER YELLOWLEGS. I had
the
alarm call backwards.
While I was watching 2 Yellowlegs, a 3rd came in thus upsetting the first 2.
The alarm call given was a series of 2 to 3 loud TEWS. Reviewing just now my
bird book, I see that I had backwards the alarm calls and the Lesser
Yellowlegs performs 1 to 3 TEWS while the Greater performs 3 or more.
(National
Geographic Society). The birds were inbetween breeding plumages.
The never ending struggling process of IDing shorebirds continues for me. :)
Sorry for any confusion.
