Greetings TN_birders,
On Sunday morning, one of my bossy mockingbirds sought me out in my bedroom
by perching in the holly tree outside the window here in the Charlotte Park
section of West Nashville near the Cleece's Ferry Boat ramp. I immediately
came
out to feed the spoiled little thing. After being off the peanut butter for
the fall season, they are back to begging for p.b. and their grape jelly. Just
now, I walked out to replenish, and the mock from the yard to my south was
right back at the old game of landing on the perch to feed before I could get
the peanut butter smeared on.
Two red-bellied woodpeckers were having a turf battle far back in my back
yard. I witnessed the "loser" fly away very quickly heading toward the deep
wooded area at the intersection of Annex-Thunderbird-Cabot Drives that extends
across a ravine and back toward the river. It's also one of the haunts of the
great horned owls.
My downy woodpeckers have been around, and another raft of redwings were here
this morning along with all the usual suspects that feed on my deck.
People in Texas are talking of Bohemian waxwing sightings. Do WE DARE
wish??? Watch your flocks of cedars carefully. After all, would it be TOTALLY
beyond the realm of possibilities?
Can any of you great Botany Buffs tell me what is WITH the birds attraction
to my 6 foot cosmos plants? Everything from my one and only gnatcatcher to the
myrtle warbler, titmice, chickadees, wrens, cardinals, etc., climb up and
down among the short string-like "leaves" of the cosmos constantly. I have
actually inspected the plants with a magnifying glass and cannot see what in
the
world the birds are after--not even an aphid is visible. Help!
Happy Thanksgiving and super birding,
Dee Thompson
