Tn-birders, Just wanted to list a couple of nice birds we found today birding through Blount Co., Tn. 1 - Snow Goose (2) - on highway 411, south of Maryville, we found 2 Snow Geese in a corn stubble field (right next to the highway)along with about 200 Canada Geese. The location was about 1/2 mile past where state route 336 comes in from the left (as you are heading south away from Maryville). There is a company called Ultra Marine Products on the left (I think the address was 5714) and the corn field is only a short bit past that on the same side of the road. 2 - Loggerhead Shrike - same road, highway 411, south of Maryville at address 4634 on the east side of the road, there is a small business called Out West Tack and feed. Right next to the road there is a wooden crossbar where we saw the shrike. 3 - Kyker Bottoms in Blount Co. - The recent rains have deposited a fair amount of water in the refuge and today we saw: Pintail Duck - about 20 Gadwall - 10 American Black Duck - 3 Green-winged Teal - 4 Mallard American Widgeon - 4 Northern Shoveler - 5 Bufflehead - 3 Ring-necked Duck - 8+ Across the road from the parking lot where the wooden hide is (near the refuge manager's house), there is a small local pond. On this pond we had Hooded Merganser and 5 Lesser Scaup. Great birding.
