Kelly Roy and I observed the two Bledsoe County Scissor-tailed Flycatchers
early Saturday afternoon (June 24) at the location reported by Roi Shannon
June 11? ?Nine Mile Crossroad in Sequatchie Valley. The nest is located on
the center capacitor on second power pole on the right after crossing Old
York Hwy.? Very close to the field where the Short-Eared Owls and Northern
Harriers were this past winter. We couldn't see into the nest but the female
appears to be incubating so the birds should be viewable for some time. The
Scissor-taileds were life birds for me after 3 unsuccessful attempts to find
them in Rutherford County. Spectacular birds.
A bit farther on down Nine Mile Crossroad is a small white bridge apparently
hosting nesting Cliff Swallows. We stood on the bridge and had Cliff
Swallows flying around us at eye level just a few feet from our faces.
Another treat.
Again to quote Roi Shannon: "Nine Mile Crossroad is located approximately
5.75 miles south of
the Cumberland and Bledsoe County lines on the East side of Hwy 127."
