Singing blackpolls were working the tall trees of my back yard this morning
when I let my poodles out on my deck at 6:50 AM. My yearly yellow warbler
was here Saturday and Sunday.
A male cardinal provided moments of joviality to a group of women who were at
a meeting in the family room of a home in the West Meade section of Nashville
yesterday. It repeatedly fluttered from the concrete up to the edge of a
large planter in attempts to dislodge a dead piece of vine with his little
wings a-flapping all the while. After a couple of minutes, he gave up. A
few minutes later, he returned with renewed vigor and kept on "keeping on"
until he got a little bit of vine and flew off into the shrubbery assumably
to "vine up" the nest.
To the lady who sent the yellow cake suggestion for orioles, etc., I must
report that yellow cake has now become yet another favorite food for my
mockingbirds! All my birds seem to like it, but I've had no orioles or
tanagers come around yet for ANYTHING including lots of fruit and a full
hummingbird feeder which has seen no hummingbird yet to my knowledge.
At last count, my little space of yard in Charlotte Park (West Nashville) has
been visited or flown over by 67 species of birds since 1991 including
everything from my year around "boarding" mockingbirds to that ONE flyover
bald eagle recently. I feel pretty lucky with that number as most of my
neighborhood is rather treeless and shrubless, but the Cumberland River is
less than half a mile away which helps a little bit.
Happy spring migration to all.
