On my way home from the TOS meeting in Memphis I birded Radnor Monday morning
(Davidson County, April 28) and around 11 a.m. I heard a Black-billed Cuckoo
calling from a tree adjacent to the lower level of the east parking lot. Try
as I might, I could not locate the bird in all the leaves though it could not
have been more than a few feet from me. It was loudly singing in groups of
four notes: tu tu tu tu, tu tu tu tu. A second Black-billed Cuckoo could
sometimes be heard in the distance responding. After about 5 minutes it had
moved off and gave a couple of 5-noted songs: tu tu tu tu tu, tu tu tu tu tu,
before falling silent.
Radnor was wonderful. White-eyed Vireos popping out at eye level, a singing
Prothonotary Warbler that posed nicely for photographs, a pair of
Prothonotaries by the Ranger's House, one of which was seen entering and then
peering out of the Bluebird box behind the house. I even got a good look at a
Northern Parula. Obviously this is only some of the highlights but I don't
have time for a long post.
