[TN-Bird] Black-bellied Whistling Duck young photos-Ensley Bottoms

July 23, 2008
Ensley Bottoms
Shelby Co. TN

On Wednesday, I spent about an hour looking for mom and her charges.
Finally, she brought them out of the weeds for a feed and splashing baths. The
photos are poor, taken from about a quarter mile away but will be the best
until
she moves them to a more open area, out of the marsh. The young birds are far
more distinctively marked than any of our regularly nesting ducks. The
youngsters are hard to count but there are at least 10 maybe even one or two
more.
The following site updates the Black-bellied Whistling Duck movements and
nesting here at the "pits" in Memphis.

A quick trip around for shorebirds revealed the continued jump in numbers of
Western Sandpipers. This surge will soon pass to the south making them harder
to find among the growing numbers of Semipalmated and Least. Time for
another foreign traveler to show up;o)
Good Birding !!!

What is this feathered thing that lifts my heart to the heavens.
