[TN-Bird] Birds in feeding frenzy during steady rain

Happy Thanksgiving Birders,
Since around noon, there has been a large crowd of assorted species of birds
feeding constantly at my feeders here in the Charlotte Park section of West
Nashville. There has been a slow, moderately heavy and steady rain all
afternoon. Obviously, the myriad of blue jays, cardinals, juncos, chickdees,
titmice, Carolina wrens, house finches, house sparrows, white-throateds, rock
pigeons, mourning doves, starlings, red-winged blackbirds and common grackles
have been filling up for the expected cold weather that is reported to be on
its way overnight. Only the absence of peanut butter which the mockingbirds
finished off at the beginning of the rain has kept them away. Even the male
downy woodpecker came to sip sugar water from the hummingbird feeder. If I
can
get up the gumption to go out in the rain and replenish the PB onto the deck
rail, the mockingbirds may return. I open the French doors and toss more
seed on the deck where the birds continue to patter around in the water to
feed
on them. The way the birds are feeding so greedily today makes me believe
that their instincts tell them to really fill up this afternoon for a cold
tomorrow. I think it went up to about 70 degrees today, but I've heard
predictions for a low of 28 degrees in the morning with a few snow flurries
expected.
We will SEE what actually happens tomorrow.
A lull in the rain just prompted me to put out more PB and other food, but
NOW those @#&%!!! squirrels have come to really make a dent in Dee's
"Smorgabird!" The weather "ceiling" is low enough that I can hear trains
going down
the track a couple of miles away. That often happens during bad weather, but
I don't hear them at other times.
Enjoy your holidays. Go find a "good" bird tomorrow, and I mean one other
than your roasted turkey or whatever.
