While working at Ghost River State Natural Area in Fayette County on April 28,
2009 from 11:40 AM till 3 PM I saw or heard the following birds (select list
does not include all birds heard/seen):
1. Great Blue Heron- heronry seen from Bateman Road includes ten nests with
three adult GBHerons seen standing on nests and one sitting within a nest. One
adult was observed taking nesting material (sticks) from one nest that appeared
inactive to another nest.
2. King Rail?- From the same site where I watched the heronry, I heard the kek
kek kek notes of a rail and also heard the grunting noises (maybe 3 separate
individuals) that some rails make. If I listened closely I could hear these
grunting calls every few seconds (though sometimes there would be no grunting
calls for minutes). I imitated the kek kek kek notes and had a rail counter
with its own kek kek kek calls. I never saw a rail. I'm assuming what I heard
were king rails due to the calls made, the habitat (marsh), and the breeding
range within TN as mapped in the Atlas of the Breeding Birds of TN. According
to a list of birds from Ghost River State Natural Area, no rails other than
American Coot are listed for the area. The marsh habitat here extends for
maybe 60-acres or more. For those that may go to the area the location was-
take Bateman Road south from TN Route 57 for about 3-miles; you will cross over
the Wolf River; park under the transmission line just south of the Wolf River;
there is an opening overlooking the marsh on the left (east).
3. Yellow-billed cuckoo
4. Red-headed woodpeckers- possibly nesting
5. Eastern kingbird
6. Great crested flycatcher
7. Gray catbird
8. White-eyed vireo
9. Red-eyed vireo
10. Northern Parula
11. Yellow warbler
12. Yellow-throated warbler
13. Prothonotary warbler
14. Louisiana waterthrush
15. Kentucky warbler
16. Common yellowthroat
17. Yellow-breasted chat
18. Indigo bunting
