Saturday (Oct. 22) my tulip tree in west Knox County, Tennessee was filled
with birds, including some species not seen in a while... brought in by the
cold front no doubt (most were not still there Sunday).
ruby crowned kinglet
2 or 3 yellow rumped warblers
chipping sparrow
unidentified warbler (maybe a Tennessee, just had a quick glimpse)
In front of the tree is a nestbox used once unsuccessfully by bluebirds this
past spring. I watched a beautiful European starling (they are lovely,
though annoying) attempt several times to enter the box. It would get about
halfway in and then back out, just couldn't quite fit I guess. Suddenly a
bright blue flash dived at the starling and drove it away - a male Eastern
bluebird. Soon both the male and female bluehirds were on the box and
peering inside it. The female even entered for a brief inspection. I
checked the box after they left. It was, of course, empty. Last winter a
downy woodpecker roosted in the box. I wonder if the bluebirds will
tolerate that again this winter.
Have also been hearing white throated sparrows since last Wednesday and saw
2 on Sunday under the feeders.
