TN-Birders,
Two weeks ago, I went with my brother to Ft. Myers, FL to help clean up the
damage to his place from Hurricane Charley. His problems were minor
compared to some others we saw down there. One thing that struck me was the
absence of birds in the area. We saw a few grackles in a Wal-Mart parking
lot (with ragged feathers) but that was about it. I've been wondering if
there has been any research done on the plight of our feathered friends when
such an event occurs. Do their instincts tell them to get out of the way?
Do they try to "hang on"? Charley was packing winds of 145+mph when it hit
land and I don't suppose many could survive that (except a few grackles with
ragged feathers). Just wondering.......
