Shelby County
27 Apr 2002
Yesterday I made an effort to find a large number of species here in the
county. It was not an all day effort, sort of a "lite" big day.
I began at Shelby Farms at 6:15 (that's when the gates open -- sunrise);
did not attempt nocturnal birding. After about an hour, rain came, so that I
stayed at the farm, putting off Shelby Forest. So I checked the fields toward
Senior Garden, finding a dozen bobolinks and a Grasshopper Sparrow. Then at
the large pond behind the fish farm, there was an adult Black-crowned
Night-Heron.
It was 9:00 before I got to Shelby Forest -- not good, but I thought the
day might be rained out completely. Fortunately, the rain was over, but the
clouds remained.
Next places checked were Eagle Lake and the EARTH Complex area. Painted
Bunting checked for, but not heard. Had to drive Peebles Rd. a second time to
see a Eurasian Collared-Dove. Finally, checked Robco Lake to find a
Ring-billed Gull, closing the day with 124 species.
Other notables:
Ring-necked Duck - 3 at Eagle Lake
Caspian Tern - 1 at TVA Lake
Forster's Tern - 1 at Shelby Farms
House Wren - 1 at Shelby Farms
Gray-cheeked Thrush and Blue-headed Vireo - Shelby Forest
Warblers - 22 species, including 8(!) Nashville, 6 Cerulean, 3 Worm-eating, 1
Swainson's, 2 Northern and 4 Louisiana Waterthrushes
