[tn-bird] Big South Fork birding

9-28-02 Saturday

It was an absolutely perfect day to bird in Big South Fork National Park.
Temperatures were cool with a brilliant blue sky. I checked several farm
ponds on the way there looking for any "storm birds" that might have come
in. Therefore, I did not arrive in the park untill 11:00, so I probably
missed several migrants. I birded the East Rim Overlook Rd/ thickets
and along the road to Leatherwood Ford and hiked part of John Muir Trail
from there. Tons of people were around the visitor center for a fall
festival of sorts, so I drove back into Duncan Hollow. I only saw 26
species, but several flurries of Warblers were moving about including -
Magnolia/ Am.Redstart/ Black th.Green/ Chestnut-Sided and Worm
Eating/ Common Yellowthroat/ 4 PALM WARBLERS/ only 1 Pine Wa. that
was singing in Duncan Hollow. He is still hanging on despite all the
dead Pines.
6 ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK were feeding on Dogwood berries. A
YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO was near the firing range on East Rim Rd. as well
as an Eastern Screech Owl in that area. I had a total of 8 Blue-headed
Vireo with a couple still singing. Only ONE Sparrow was seen all day...an
immature Chipping Sparrowon East Rim Rd.

(I checked Cove Lake early this morning (Campbell County) It was rather
quiet. 3 Great Egrets were present.
