Trenton, Gibson County
Yesterday around 5 pm while leaving work and walking to my truck I heard Snow
Geese and looked up to see a huge flock high overhead. I grabbed my binoculars,
did a quick count, and estimated the flock to be over 1000 birds. They were
flying towards the southeast. There were also at least 12 Ross's Geese in the
flock - there were probably more but the light was getting poor and they were
moving steadily away from me.
Then last night I was outside at about 9:15 pm and I again heard Snow Geese
high overhead. Couldn't tell how many were up there in the night sky but I
could hear them for over 5 minutes so it was another pretty big flock.

Gibson County Lake, Gibson County
On Saturday I took my 9 year old son and my 5 year old daughter out to Gibson
County Lake just east of Trenton in hopes of showing them a Bald Eagle. I
scanned the lake and soon saw a lone adult eagle perched in a snag across the
lake. We got good views of it in the scope and had a few other birds of
interest while we were there:
Great Egret - 1
Ruddy Duck - 6
Pied-billed Grebe - 8
Bufflehead - 2
Double-crested Cormorant - 2 on the lake plus a flock of 27 that flew over
Common Loon - 6
My son said his favorite bird that we saw was a Belted Kingfisher that we a an
up close scope view of and my daughters favorite was an up close Red-tailed
Hawk sitting on the top of a nearby utility pole. I may have a couple of
birders in the family besides me yet - we'll see!
Good birding,
Mark Greene
