[TN-Bird] Bell's Bend possibilities......

Hello,

As the crow flies, I am less than a mile from the shore of Bell's Bend which
is across the Cumberland River from where I live in Charlotte Park. While I
was taking my dogs out and putting bird seed out of my deck prior to eating
lunch around 11AM, I saw a flock of about 20 birds fly over in my direction
from
off the river, the doubled back over to Bell's Bend. These birds had the
crazy, erratic flight pattern that I remember from the flocks of various
longspurs
(chestnut collared, Smiths & McCown's) that I have seen waaaay back in my
past, so I THINK these MAY have been longspurs. Pipits, larks & even cedar
waxwings can be a possibility, but a little voice inside me (and old recalled
experiences) simply said, "Longspurs." Since Laplands would be a lifer, I
would
like to go looking but just can't at the moment. Maybe later. Hopefully,
they'll hang around. I've had cedars several times this past week, but these
birds
just didn't seem to quite fit the behavior for them. My "gut" keeps growling
"longspur"!

If anyone wants to try, Bell's Bend is reached by following highway 12 which
runs between the Bordeaux part of Nashville to Ashland City. Normally, one
would take I-40 West to Briley Parkway (White Bridge Road) & go north to Hwy
12,
however, I-40 West is under construction in that part of town with frequent
shutdowns. Just west of the Briley/Hwy 12 junction, you''ll come to the
community of Scottsboro where you need to take Old Hickory Blvd. sort of south
&
east. There are sod farms between Scottsboro and the river where these birds
have been seen before, but I've never been so lucky although I have tried
NUMEROUS times. The "Lap" is one of my "elusives."

Cheers & prayers,

Dee Thompson
Nashville, TN (Charlotte Park, near Cleece's Ferry & across from Bell's Bend)
