Ensley Bottoms
Shelby Co. TN
A quick morning trip to Ensley (I was in the neighborhood;o) to check on the
Eagle nest, held three surprises.
The first was, 2 displaying Wild Turkeys trying to impress a hen which fed
giving no notice to all the bluster and rattling feathers.
The second was, 3 Fish Crows harassing a Red-tailed Hawk with a REAL TWIST.
The twist being the Red-tail did a roll and snatched one of the crows from the
air. One of the remaining two crows headed for the hills and the other gave
but a short chase. As the hawk flew over the road, I could see the crow
dangling
from its claws and it showed no signs of life. Mark one up for the Red-tailed
Hawk. I've never seen this before but birds always hold back and let you see
just glimpses of their true lives.
The third was a battle between two "nonpareils" or Painted Buntings in a song
competition. One singing and then the other as they sat on exposed perches 40
feet apart while a third male foraged beneath, seemly un-perturbed. Three
males in view at one time in TN is another first for me and looks like there
will
be a territory battle for the next few days at this site. I got a head shot
of one of the singing birds if interested.
And the Bald Eagle still sets eggs.
Good Birding!!!
