At this time of year, the bat you saw is probably an eastern red bat
(Lasiurus borealis), a fairly common to common migratory tree-dwelling bat
that is present in Tennessee throughout the year. They do not enter deep
hibernation and will become active during warm spells during the winter.

Subject: [TN-Bird] Bat in January, Weir Dam, Sullivan County, TN
Gilbert Derouen and Reece Jamerson, Johnson City, TN, and Bryan
Stevens, Hampton, TN, observed a bat swooping over the water from the
parking lot on the left after passing the main parking lot at the Weir
Dam in Sullivan County, TN. We were looking back toward the weir area
when Gilbert spotted the bat. The sighting took place during their
Tuesday (Jan. 24) afternoon birding trip.
None of us are bat experts. We just know it was small (sparrow-sized)
,brownish and foraging and swooping over the water. We did think it a
little unusual to see a bat feeding in the daylight and in January.
Some good birds at the area around the Weir included Redheads, Lesser
Scaup, Ring-necked Duck, American Wigeon and Bufflehead.
Bryan Stevens,
Hampton, TN
