[TN-Bird] Barn owl; Marshall Cty

Yesterday a single Barn owl was observed sitting in a nest box located in the
top of a pole barn on my farm. It was a great sight to behold as I've been
waiting over 5 years for this day.

While surveying wind damage to the tin roof of the barn I noticed some white
wash on the walls next to some cross beams. I then looked almost straight up to
see a Barn owl peering down at me from the opening of the nest box. It caught
me completely off guard since I've been used to seeing an owl-less opening for
many years. I left the area promptly without flushing the bird. The nest box,
courtesy of the Wood Thrush Shop, was installed on December 29, 2002
approximately 22 ft high. The box has had an assortment of avian inhabitants
over the years including chickens and starlings, but no Barn owls until now.

A neighbor told me about some 'white owls' last year in a nearby barn. I went
and checked it out hoping for Barn owls, but ended up hearing Barred owls and
dismissed the sighting. Maybe they were Barn owls after all.

I do not know if the owl is breeding or not, but will certainly be keeping
closer tabs in the coming months.
