Just a couple notes from Bark Camp Barrens WMA in Coffee Co. I conducted
standardized point counts across nearly all the mitigation forest
(regeneration) on Hickerson Rd (the roadside Henslow's Sparrow location) on Wed
and Thursday.
Totals:
~70+ Yellow-breasted Chat
~40+ Prairie Warbler
~20 singing Northern Bobwhite
4 Henslow's Sparrows- 3 by the 90 degree turn by the sod farm and 1 about 1 km
north nearer the fescue field on private property.
1 hen Wild Turkey with palm sized poults at the 90 degree bend by the sod farm
2 Willow Flycatchers- on the east side of Hickerson Rd in the area that was
burned by an arsonist 2 years ago. The birds were counter singing on the north
end of the mitigation by the private land fescue field. One provided very nice
looks too, made up for the thrashing through blackberry and poison ivy all
morning.
I had likely nesting Cedar Waxwings in there last year, but haven't seen any
yet this year.
Cheers,
Scott Somershoe
