I meant to post a few birds that I had on Monday from Bark Camp Barrens =
WMA, in Coffee County. I spent the day in the warm season grass fields, =
but saw a few interesting things other then clumps of grass. I flushed 2 =
fledglings of what I'm 99% sure were Common Yellowthroats. They could =
only fly about 6 feet at a time and I could never get a look at the birds =
nor get close enough to them. They hid pretty well in the tall bluestem. =
When I pished, the only bird that was close and very angry was an adult =
Common Yellowthroat. The fledglings were certainly yellowthroat size, so =
maybe they were baby yellowthroats. Certainly a late fledge, but not out =
of the question by any means. I also saw dependent Cardinals last week in =
Smyrna, in Rutherford County.
I also had small numbers of Bobolinks on the field. I didn't see any of =
them well (wasn't carrying my binocs because I had a ton of gear with me =
and they get in the way), but they constantly made their distinct flight =
call and some were fairly close to me (~20 meters). There were birds =
flying over and flushing out of the tall grass in small numbers, i.e. =
groups of 3-5 birds, never more then that. =20
On two of the few times I looked up and around I did see a Sharp-shinned =
Hawk tear out of the woods and into another patch of woods. It had lunch =
in it's sights. I also had a Coopers Hawk do the same thing later in the =
day. Not a bad day considering I spent 99% of the time looking at the =
ground!
Cheers,
Scott Somershoe
