While searching for Cerulean Warblers this morning (May 31, 9 am). I
observed a Baltimore Oriole singing on the North Boundary Greenway trail
on the DOE Oak Ridge Reservation (ORR), Roane County.
I had heard the bird singing briefly in the same location a week
before, but dismissed it as a very late migrant. Since Nicholson (1997)
reports that nest building typically begins in early May and egg-laying
peaks typically in mid-May, it is highly unlikely that this bird is a
late migrant.
I am not aware of any records of Baltimore Orioles observed in Roane
County during the breeding season, although Mann et al (1997, Migrant
68:76-93) mentions that there have been records on the ORR during the
breeding season, but gives no details. Certainly the species was not
recorded in Roane County during the most recent breeding bird survey
(Nicholson, 1997) and was a very uncommon summer resident throughout the
central and southern Ridge and Valley and Cumberland Plateau during that
same survey. I did observe a male Balt. Oriole at the Univ. of TN
arboretum in Anderson County in June, 2001 (last year).
Habitat was the edge of a large tract of mature riparian hardwoods
(Sycamore, Yellow Poplar, Black Walnut) adjacent to thick brushy scrub
and to clearings.
