Over the last few years I have spent a fair amount of time listening
for Bachman's Sparrows in clearcuts in Lewis County as well as
adjacent northern Wayne County and eastern Perry County, with 100%
negative results so far. Today I explored some of the historical
areas where the species occured in southern Wayne County in recent
decades, including on the Breeding Bird Atlas. I have not seen any
of the scorched-earth, slash-and-burn pine conversion habitat that
Damien Simbek describes as the formerly occupied habitat; that
practice seems to have fallen out of favor. In southern Wayne County
I saw lots of very dense young pine stands that resulted from this
sort of practice, but nothing recent nor remotely suitable for
Bachman' Sparrows.
Looking at recent reports from other locations, I find the last two
reports on this mailing list were from 2007 in Montgomery County and
2005 in Wayne County. The 2005 Wayne County spot (Collinwood BBS
route) has not yielded the species again, nor had it ever before. In
eBird the most recent Tennessee reports are from 2004 in the
Cumberland Plateau area. This leads me to ask: Are there any known
active locations for Bachman's Sparrows in Tennessee?
