Hello Everyone,
After a steamingly hot and quite successful late Saturday and early Sunday
birding Ensley Bottoms and Memphis with our Nashville TOS group (see Jeff
Wilson's weekend report for details), I went to the Veterinarian's office this
morning to pick up my two poodles. When I returned home with Magnolia &
Beaujolais. they needed a brief break in the back yard here in the Charlotte
Park
section of West Nashville, Davidson County. While the poodles were
"performing," I heard a lot of cardinal "chatter" and looked over just in time
to see
two baby cardinals fly unsteadily from the nest to a nearby shrub while Mama
and Daddy "egged them on." First flight? I suspect it was. That was about
40 minutes ago, and Mama and Daddy have since lured the little ones the 75
feet across to my deck where they are cracking sunflower seeds and feeding the
begging babies from "Dee's Smorgabird." Up until now, I have only had one
baby cardinal our of seven mating couples. All summer, my poor cardinals have
been feeding baby cowbirds!!!!!!
Cheers, prayers and better birding,
Dee Thompson
Nashville, TN
