I received a phone call today (Saturday, Oct. 29) from Rita Schuettler, a
resident on Powder Branch Road in Carter County, TN.
She told me she has had a hummingbird visiting her feeders for the past few
days. Today, she said, the bird visited almost every 15-20 minutes, although
earlier in the week the bird only made occasional afternoon appearances.
She said her Ruby-throated Hummingbirds had been gone for at least two weeks
before this bird showed up. She believes the visitor is a female Rufous
Hummingbird, but we discussed briefly the difficulty of identifying
Selasphorous
hummers.
She said she will keep me updated on the hummingbird's visits. She also said
several of her neighbors have hummingbird feeders, so the bird may be dividing
its time between her yard and some neighboring yards.

Hampton, TN
