[TN-Bird] Anhinga - Laughing Gull - Lake Co. TN

June 14-15, 2008
Mud Lake / Phillippy Pits
Lake Co, TN

I flushed and photographed an ANHINGA just west of Mud Lake on Saturday and
photographed a first summer LAUGHING GULL at the Phillippy Pits in Lake Co, on
Sunday. Four White Pelicans were also seen circling over the Phillippy area
on Sunday and 2 adult Ring-billed Gulls were photographed resting at 103
Highway and the Great River Road.

On Saturday, I found a Fulvous Whistling Duck across the river in Missouri
just off I-155 at exit 4. I photographed it hanging with some Mallards and a
male Blue-winged Teal. I also had 17 Black-necked Stilt youngsters.

I searched Reelfoot Lake from one end to the other and saw NO terns or gulls
(not even a Least Tern) and only 2 male Ruddy Ducks and a single Pelican
were out from Keystone. Least Terns are numerous in all the flooded areas with
nesting in progress at some locations. The river is on another rise and the
terns can't wait for the sandbars. They don't usually have a lot of success
nesting in the fields due to predators and the wet areas drying before they can

fledge the young.

Good Birding !!!
