[TN-Bird] Re: And at your feeder...

Mark Greene's discovery of a Snow Bunting in Obion County is exciting. The
species always is, like, the "pair" that winter on Old Hickory Lake in
Nashville (spot now renowned as Snow Bunting Peninsula), and the bird at the
dump on the Alabama coast this winter. But you must read Scott Freidhof's
post today on Kentucky Birding. At his feeder today, he had 21 Horned Larks,
1 Lapland Longspur, and 39 Snow Buntings along with 9 American Tree
Sparrows. Brainard Palmer-Ball, Jr., at his mother's home in Louisville,
would spread long strips of fresh manure (dairy farm), as I remember it, and
sometimes corn out in the snow and wait. Like a magnet, larks, longspurs,
and buntings appeared. Frank Renow in January 2004, put 5 pounds of mixed
seed in the snow, thus creating a feeder, at the W.Y.C dredge deposal area
in Kentucky and returned the next day to find 39 Snow Buntings (he also
attracted them by feed at another site in January 1999). So, keep a bag of
corn and seeds in your car in case you get stranded in the snow.
