For an evening run, I went over to the land where I am about to build my
barn/house (Roundtree Lane, northerm tip of Chester County) In the
"gloaming" and mist, and over the crunching of wet sand and gravel under my
feet, I heard what sounded like nighthawks. I knew it was too early for
them, so stopped to listen more closely, suspecting it might be some kind
of tree frog. Then I heard the twittering and knew it was the American
woodcock doing his doodling. Strain as I might, I could never see him
against the darkening sky. I heard at least two others at points along the
dead-end road, and since I didn't venture out into the wet pasture, I
wonder how many more there might be. Maybe I've found the name for little
mini-refuge now...Timberdoodle...
...sure made me happy to think I'll be able to enjoy them there each spring
since I'll try to preserve the habitat as is, and see if I can coach the
neighbors to do likewise..
