Over the weekend I enjoyed early morning birding in front of my home
in the River Plantation Subdivision of Bellevue on the SW side of
Nashville. The past several days I've seen a pair of WHITE-EYED
VIREOs moving about in the dense trees next to the Harpeth River,
and the male has been calling extensively, rivaling the male INDIGO
BUNTING in his output of song. As I was preparing to give up my
watch and have some breakfast, a modest sized bird flew in and landed
on a bare limb. In binoculars it turned into an AMERICAN KESTRAL, a
bird I'd not seen in our subdivision for some months. More
interesting was the kestral's entourage. I watched in amazement
as several BARN SWALLOWS swooped down on the perched kestral to
disturb it. After perhaps 30 seconds, the kestral decided it had
had enough and flew away with 5 BARN SWALLOWs chasing after it.
I'd never seen this particular pecking order before.
