Linda, and other bird chatters,
Membership in various organizations is a good answer. There are so
many out there, and so many of them are good, but we can't all join
them all, can we? Tracey and I base our memberships not so much on
what we can get from an organzation, but on what the organization
does with that membership money.
Unfortunately, our budget only allows a few memberships, sothe only
national ones we carry are ABA (mostly for Birding) and Nature
Conservancy (IMHO, the most effective national environmental
organization). We hold several local memberships, since small
locally focused organizations can do a lot of good. We're members of
TOS (of course), Friends of Roan Mtn, Friends of the Smokies, Little
River Watershed Association and Foothills Land Conservancy. If we
had a bit more money, I'd add in ABC.
I know nothing of their member services, but I admire ABC's efforts -
they lead Cats Indoors! for one thing. They do a lot of public
info/advocacy, too. I also think their field guide is one of the
best for a beginning birder, and has a lot of info in it even for
more experienced birders.
