January 30, 2009 NE Obion County Continuing with the string of good birds that have been about in Obion County in the aftermath of the ice storm I had 6 American Tree Sparrows on Harris Road (off Ken-Tenn Hwy.) today. The sparrows were near a ditch at the first bridge on Harris Rd. south of the jct. with Ken-Tenn Hwy. Also had a Merlin was on Hollie Hutchison Rd. just south of the jct. with Harris Rd. near the railroad tracks. The Merlin was wreaking havoc on a large flock of blackbirds and put on quite a show for several seconds. I had a big flock of geese fly over Harris Road this morning. There were 500 plus Snow Geese, about 60 Greater White-fronted Geese, and 6 Ross's Geese in the flock. Most of the ice melted away in the sunshine and 40 plus degree temperatures today and the birds were not as visible along the roadsides ect. this afternoon as they have been the last few days. More later...
