Ensley Bottoms
Shelby Co. TN
This has been a busy week at the pits with more comings and goings than the
Memphis Airport. Most of the turmoil caused by 20 to 30 Mississippi Kites
consistently moving around the area and feeding really low on a huge dragonfly
hatch. The big mover of Wind Birds was seen again on Thursday, the Peregrine
that appears to be the same one that has been around for 2 weeks and 2 immature
Red-tailed and a Cooper's that also occasionally stir the mix.
Saturday, the juvenile birds were in fine fettle with my first sharply
attire Western for the season joined by my first immature "sweet" Semipalmated
Plover found among the many adults that have been around for a couple of weeks.
The Semipalmated and Least Sandpiper juvenile numbers have really jumped and
makes for some great scope fulls of eye candy.
The over all numbers have suffered from the cool northwest wind and
continued harassment from raptors but there are still 12 species to be had if
you
take the time to search and there are many rewards for those that do.
Short trips during the week found the Coot, Wood Ducks, Mallards, and
Blue-wing Teal numbers holding with the female leucistic Mallard still around
but I
only briefly saw a single Black-bellied Whistling Duck. The bird was in
dense cover and immediately disappeared, hope the young are doing well, they
should be flying in about 3 more weeks.
Good Birding !!!
