[TN-Bird] Adult Sabine's Gull Memphis

Oct. 21, 2007
Mississippi River,?Shelby Co. TN

What the migration on Sunday lacked in numbers from Saturday parade?was more
than made up for?in Quality!

After an hour's watch from Mud Island with just a Barn Swallow,?a
lonely?Chimney Swift, a few Rough-wings, a flight of 3 Shovelers and 5
Pintails, a single gull was seen far up river. I followed its different and
steady flight until I saw a dark head and thought it only another Franklin's
but it then turned and showed that unmistakable wing pattern. My sixth?Sabine's
for TN but my first in adult plumage. What a kick in the pants bird. I chased
it from the north parking lot to the south, its steady flight never taking it
far from the waters surface, circling only once to check out something of
interest on the water and then on south, gaining altitude only when necessary
to fly over the bridge, then down again and disappearing steadily into the wind
and the ocean waters to the south..........

I called Mike Todd up?on the TN river for a heads up and?the immature Sabine's
that shortly thereafter flew by them, I later found to be the third for that
day here in the Mis-south, as another was seen on Millwood Lake in Arkansas. As
I've always said, rare birds are not as rare as birders in the field. Seek and
ye shall find.

I'll report on the rest of this great day later..........
