Hi, Frank. I understand your point. And I don't mind discussing
politics, but the subject of this internet group is birding not politics.
I was told by someone who knows, that in Memphis, the local
Audubon Society is dominated by leftists and activists with their
own extremist political agenda, such that the regular people who
just want to bird just for the sake of birding, prefer the local
Tennessee Ornithological Society, which is less political and
therefore more ornithological.
Interesting irony. The gigantic marshes in southern Iraq which
once teemed with waterbirds and migrants was cruelly drained
and destroyed by Saddam Hussein. He was punishing his
political adversaries in southern Iraq. While he ruled in Baghdad,
the most important wetland habitat in Iraq was destroyed. Then
George Bush went and overthrew the tyrant. Now in Iraq, the
locals are trying to refurbish the damaged marshes. The locals
are refilling parts of the marshes but there are sections of the
marshes which suffer from harmful levels of salt in the watertable.
It will take a while to get it back to acceptable levels, but they
couldn't have even started rehabilitating the marshes without
George Bush ( cringe if you want to ) who toppled Saddam.
