[TN-Bird] Re: 91 and hawks

What a nice picture! I showed it to my bird class this
morning as we have one coming to a feeder in the county which
has similar plumage. It is indeed a SY(second year) bird,
since HY (hatch year) birds begin their prealternate molt Nov-
Feb into their 1st alternate plumage(often called prenuptial
or breeding). We seldom see birds in their transition here in
the Shenandoah Valley. It also appears that the bird in the
background is the "tan morph" of the white-throated sparrow.

Thanks again for sharing you picture with us.

Thanks, but I wasn't so proud of the photo! It's actually poor quality, but I
had to take it through the window and the glass was dirty.

I was afraid that if I took the time to go outside and open the door, I would
miss it perhaps frightened it away. I suppose that's better than nothing....

I get quite a few of those sparrows along with House sparrows. Actually, dozens
on a daily basis. The young hawks (pretty certain this is an immature Cooper's
hawk) in the driveway were much better photos. At least for an amateur
photographer and someone new to birding.

These two hawks were on different trees, about ten feet apart, making all sorts
of noise. They were magnificent animals!
