At 5:15PM on Sunday, 30 April 2006, I had approximately 75 WILLET
at the Concord Park boat ramp off of Northshore Drive in west
Knox Co. The birds were still there, appearing set to roost when
I stopped back by at 7:00 PM. The birds flew in and sat down on
a private boat pier at the end of Westland Dr.
If you go to the boat ramp, to the east (your left facing the water)
look for a large Purple Martin house on a small penninsula. Just
inshore of that is the boat pier and a breakwater wall under
construction. They should spend the night so if you're there
first thing in the morning, you'll probably find them.
Other birds in the area:
1 Forsters Tern
4 Ring-billed Gull
1 Spotted Sandpiper
I was working the walking trail and soccer fields to the east
of the boat ramp when, from behind me I heard a rucus and thought
"That sounds like a Willet. That sounds like a LOT of Willets."
I turned around and saw a large flock of birds come in and circle
over the area about 6 times before flying off to the west toward
Concord Marina. The white wing-stripes and distinctive calls
left no doubt on the ID.
About 30 min later, just as I finished packing the scope back in
the truck, they came back, circled and landed on the pier. I
unpacked the scope and camera and made my way back out to the
little spit past the soccer fields. The birds got up again when
a boat passed by and I got one IDable photo of the birds in the
air. They landed back on the pier where I was able to get another
few photos of them on the pier. I'll try to post these online
soon.
Lots of other good birds on the Knox County Spring Count. But
that's another post.
