[TN-Bird] 5 Winter wrens at Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area

3 Winter wrens seen, & 2 more were heard on the John Litton
& Oscar Blevins trails Sunday 10/27. According to the the
Big South Fork checklist for birds issued by the National Park
Service/ Stephen Steadman, Winter wrens are uncommon with 1-2
seen/heard in a day during Fall & Winter periods; so we felt
like we hit the mother lode.

Also seen: 2 Hermit thrushes, numerous Golden & Ruby
crowned kinglets (mostly Golden crowned), Yellow rumped
warbler, lots of Chipping sparrows, & Slate-colored juncos.

Saturday 10/26, on the BSF Blue Heron trail- KY side: a Ruffed
grouse was flushed, a Sharp-shinned hawk was seen from the Blue
Heron overlook, RC & GC kinglets & Yellow-bellied
sapsucker
also seen. A pine warbler was seen near the river where the
trail runs through a large grassy area.

The fall colors were gorgeous & peaking in many areas. One
park ranger told us they are the best he has seen in years.

Lots of downy, pileated, & red-bellied woodpeckers seen at
both spots working the dead pines. The pine beetle devastation
is something else, thousands upon thousands of trees gone. It?s
unbelievable how much work park services & trail guides have
done to clear trees off the trails & keeping dead trees off
the roads. We complimented 2 rangers on all their hard work.
They said their resumes now include extensive bobcat & chain
saw experience.
