Melinda Welton and I spent most of the day today birding around the Big
Sandy Unit of Tennessee NWR in Henry and Benton Counties. The highlight was
the continuing presence of two WESTERN GREBES mixed in with the ducks just
to the west of Pace Point. Also in the same flock was a RED-NECKED GREBE,
making a 4 grebe species day. Viewing conditions were optimal, so we
enjoyed nice looks. Many of the HORNED GREBES are molting, which makes them
look superficially like Eared Grebes. Try as we did, we could not turn one
into an actual Eared Grebe.

Other highlights included:

TREE SWALLOWS at Pace Point

One male PURPLE MARTIN sitting on the first martin box we checked

A decent number of REDHEADS at Britton Ford

A number of COMMON LOONS already in alternate plumage

Regards,

Chris Sloan
