Did a tour of some of my old haunts around Douglas and Cherokee Lakes in East TN today (Saturday, 18 Nov 2006). A few good birds and one great one -- the Inca Dove at Ben Britton's home in Hamblen Co. -- that gave me a rare 4-dove day in TN, especially rare in East TN. The lakes held a few Common Loons and Horned Grebes (Douglas only) but few ducks. Flushed a probable Dunlin at Douglas Dam but didn't get a good look before it flew around the corner. Call sounded good for Dunlin. highlights: Green-winged Teal, 1, on a small pond near Cherokee Dam with a few Mallards, Jefferson Co. Lesser Scaup, 12, Douglas Dam Jefferson/Sevier Co. Common Loon, 6-8 Douglas Dam, 2 Cherokee Dam Jefferson/Grainger Co. Horned Grebe, 10+ Douglas Dam Pied-billed Grebe, 20+ Douglas Dam Black-crowned Night-Heron, a handful below both dams Ring-billed Gull, 30 or so at Douglas, maybe 10 at Cherokee Bonaparte's Gull, 50+ at Douglas, 6 or so at Cherokee, all the loons seen were accompanied by Bonnies INCA DOVE, at Ben Britton's in Hamblen Co Eurasian Collared-Dove, 2, at the usual location on Hwy 11-E in New Market, Jefferson Co -- specifically at the ambulance station (Rock Pigeon and Mourning Dove obviously make up the other 2 dove species.)
