Do you guys know off the top of your head if the memory management is
the same (or similar) in windows 2003 server standard?

This is true. (to a point) but to say that 2 GB of RAM (physical) is a
limit on a 2000 box with Terminal services gives people (other than
those who understand memory mgmt) the wrong idea.
Now just because some guy wants a 8 way box with 12 gb of ram so he has
the biggest box at the party (WHICH IS COOL BTW) does not mean that that
box with VMWare is the only way to go....
I think vmware has its uses, but it does not automatically make 2k more
scalable than say Win2k on 4 Duals 2 or 4 GB each...

Let me suggest an interpretation of "Windows 2000 can only handle 2GB".
Let's say you have 4GB of RAM in a server, and a page file of 2X that
amount or another 8GB. What you now have is 4GB of physical memory (RAM)
and 12GB of virtual memory.
The Windows 2000 restriction is that any single application can only
address 2GB of virtual memory. So, if you have six applications running
on your server that each want to address 2GB of virtual memory then you
will be addressing your whole 12GB of virtual memory. You will also be
beating the tar out of your page file, since the OS will be putting
everything he cannot fit into RAM into the page file.
This is really important because you can run out of RAM long before you
run out of virtual memory in a terminal services environment. With 12 GB
of virtual memory, you can think you are golden if you are using only
33% of your VM. In fact after the OS gets done using the portion of the
4GB that he needs (between 1 and 2 BG), you are left with between 2 GB
and 3GB of RAM for all of your applications. If you are using 33% of
your 12GB of virtual memory (one third of 12 is 4GB), then you are in a
memory overcommit situation by between 1GB and 2GB. Look at how much
page file you are using, and you will know how to what degree you have
overcommitted your RAM.

I don't think it's the ONLY way to go. Most 2000 servers in production
never get anywhere near 200 users. Now if you are running out of krnl
memory hitting the RSL limit long before hard bottlenecks I would agree.
But if not then you have lots of option.
In addition what does this mean" because Windows 2000 TS can handle only
2GB of RAM "
This is not true.... putting out statements like that mislead people.

Hi David,
If you are going to run your Citrix farm on Windows 2000 TS, then VMWare
is
the only way to go; because Windows 2000 TS can handle only 2GB of RAM
and
no more than two hundred users.
I've been using VMWare for two years and the VMWare GSX version 2.5 is
pretty much stable. I suggest you run your Citrix Farm on top of
Windows
2003 Terminal Services to maximize your Quad CPU's and 8GB of RAM.

I am beginning an install of our first citrix farm, and someone has it
in
their head that vmware and citrix is the only way to go. Our first proof
of
concept is going to be under 100 users and I have 2 dell 6650's quad
with
8GB. I also have 3 dell 6400's, quad with 8GB, for later. Our whole
network
is 1600 users. I am not familiar enough with vmware to support as of yet
in
my opinion. I can see after testing and finding out limitations,etc...
can
anyone give me examples of success/failures, application lags? Thanks
