Hi Jeff, Editing file associations via the GUI is deliberately disabled to stop non-admin users from changing per-machine file associations. You can change this behaviour, but it's not a real good idea. Modifying per-machine file associations is easily done using ftype and assoc, but what you obviously want to do is modify per-user file associations. These are seen in the registry as %USERSID%_Classes and link to %USERSID%\Software\Classes. Despite the fact that "real" per-user file association support has been present since win2k, Microsoft still haven't got a way of modifying per-user file associations. Office XP uses limited per-user file associations, as does Windows Server 2003, but if you want to manage per-user file associations, it'll have to be reghacks and/or scripting. At a basic level, you're simply "transferring" values under HKLM|Software\Classes (HKCR) to HKCU\Software\Classes. I have a few people on my TS servers who require file extensions to be modified to associate a file type with an application. When I go in to edit or add a file extension to the list, all options are grayed out. Does anyone know how to do this?
