Neil, Of course, You are right. MI is difficult to cost justify for small farms. I mentioned it becasue we were discussing very large farms. Though load simulation is important in any size farm, IMO. There are some lower cost options. Scapa works a bit differently than MI, but I hear it is very functional and much cheaper (though I have never used it and haven't heard much about them lately). CitraTest has lot of fans as well, mainly because they are not expensive. The CSTK of course has it uses, but it main limitation is all the scripts run on the server, not on the client. This can help with server sizing, but does not simulate the entire solution and may not give you a good idea on user response time. Being free is the trade off however <g>. Another advantage MI has is you can use it to monitor other systems involved in the solution, and therefore determine if another component is the bottleneck. You can have MI components on your SQL datastore, your Exchange Server, DC's, and files servers for example, and be able to correlate a major increase in response time to a CPU spike on a file server or Exchange server. For full disclosure, I do NOT own stock in MI (in case you are starting to wonder), but I am sold on load simulation. You are right in your assumption on Fr3. The improvements in IMA are not specifically a feature and are part of the SP. I guess I should have just used SP3, instead of FR3. BTW, your strange disconnection story was read with great interest by many of my co-workers around the world (I forwarded it, hope you don't mind). Thanx for sharing!
