Why don't you looking at memory management software from Aurema, RTO, or Appsense? Using the PAE switch will also induce additional overhead now that the OS has process manage the PTEs. _____ From: thin-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:thin-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Toby Sent: Thursday, November 10, 2005 6:50 AM To: thin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [THIN] Re: Windows Server 2003 Standard - 4gb Limit I only have 4gb of physical ram, but after reading the the post below on the Brian Madden website, I wondered if it was possible for more to used with Windows Server 2003 Standard; 'I've just had an answer from Microsoft on this - and it's YES, you can use more than 4Gb RAM on a Terminal Server for applications that don't support (or need) the AWE calls. All you need to do is use /PAE mode I was previously limited to 25 users on a server. The CPU was <10% and the Kernel memory was hardly used but the User memory was full because the application assigns 200+Mb to each session. I can now add a further 4Gb RAM (total 8Gb) and get more users on (expect to get about 35-40) concurrent. The limit now will be the 2Gb kernel memory because, although I only have 40 users on, they all allocate a lot more PTE's in the kernel area - but 40 users shouldn't be a problem - probably get more on but I haven't tested yet.' Since that is rarely the case on Terminal Servers, AWE will allow all of the processes combined to access more than 4 GB with no single process accessing more than 2 GB. _____ From: thin-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:thin-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Tim Mangan Sent: Thursday, November 10, 2005 7:31 AM To: thin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [THIN] Re: Windows Server 2003 Standard - 4gb Limit It is possible - however not recommended for most. If you put in more than 4GB RAM, use of the PAE switch will enable an application with AWE support (Address Windows Extensions) to access the additional RAM. But only if you have apps that support AWE. This would be things like database software. It isn't for terminal servers. A better solution, although bleeding edge, would be running the 64 bit version of the OS and Citrix. You should be able to find details on PAE and 64bit over on Brian Madden's site. tim _____ From: thin-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:thin-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Toby Sent: Thursday, November 10, 2005 6:59 AM To: thin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [THIN] Windows Server 2003 Standard - 4gb Limit Hi List Environment - Windows Server 2003 Standard with PS4.0 I have read in a thread that it is possible to use more than 4gb of RAM on the above OS by using the /PAE mode. Has anyone done this, and if so, recommend it? Many thanks
